Objective: To examine the relative effectiveness of ice therapy and/or pulsed electromagnetic field in reducing pain and swelling after the immobilization period following a distal radius fracture.Methods: A total of 83 subjects were randomly allocated to receive 30 minutes of either ice plus pulsed electromagnetic field (group A); ice plus sham pulsed electromagnetic field (group B); pulsed electromagnetic field alone (group C), or sham pulsed electromagnetic field treatment for 5 consecutive days (group D). All subjects received a standard home exercise programme. A visual analogue scale was used for recording pain; volumetric displacement for measuring the swelling of the forearm; and a hand-held goniometer for measuring the range of wrist motions before treatment on days 1, 3 and 5.Results: At day 5, a significantly greater cumulative reduction in the visual analogue scores as well as ulnar deviation range of motion was found in group A than the other 3 groups. For volumetric measurement and pronation, participants in group A performed better than subjects in group D but not those in group B.Conclusion: The addition of pulsed electromagnetic field to ice therapy produces better overall treatment outcomes than ice alone, or pulsed electromagnetic field alone in pain reduction and range of joint motion in ulnar deviation and flexion for a distal radius fracture after an immobilization period of 6 weeks.

Cell membrane changes its morphology during many physiological processes with the assistance of a solid support, such as the cytoskeleton, under an environmental stimulus. Here, a novel type of stimuli-responsive lipogel was fabricated, mimicking the changes of cell membrane. The lipogel was prepared from poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (pNIPAM) microgel particle and phospholipid by a solvent-exchange method. The temperature dependent volume phase transition of pNIPAM triggers reversible transformation of the lipogel between a lipid vesicle-coated sun-like structure and a contracted hybrid sphere, through lipid merging and protrusion processes, respectively. By contrast, the salt induced pNIPAM phase transition leads to an irreversible vesicle release behaviour. The lipogel creates a unique platform for studying cell membrane behaviour and provides promising candidates in drug delivery and controlled release applications. © 2014 Elsevier B.V. In plants, as in vertebrates, natriuretic peptide (NP) hormones can influence water and solute homeostasis. Here we demonstrate that a synthetic peptide identical to the C-terminus (amino acids 99–126) of the rat atrial natriuretic peptide (rANP) modulates osmotically induced swelling of mesophyll cell protoplasts (MCPs) in a concentration and time-dependent manner. Osmotically-induced volume changes in MCPs are enhanced by plant extracts with NP immunoreactivity and this effect is concentration-dependent. In contrast, pre-treatment of the plant extracts with rabbit anti-human ANP (99–126) antiserum suppresses enhanced osmoticum-induced swelling. Isolated plant peptides (irPNP) that have been immunoaffinity purified with rabbit anti-human ANP (99–126) antiserum also enhance osmotically-induced swelling. While rANP and irPNP cause increases in cGMP levels in MCPs, elevated cGMP levels do not cause increases in osmoticum-dependent swelling but exert an inhibitory effect. These findings are consistent with a NP-dependent, cGMP-independent effect on plant cell volume regulation and a role in homeostasis for peptides that are recognized by antibodies directed against the C-terminus of vertebrate ANPs.

The standard tests for relaxation shrinkage and hygral expansion of wool fabric take no account of pH. It is shown in this work that the pH of the solution in which wool fabric is relaxed as part of the procedure for measuring dimensional properties has a significant influence on the results. At around pH 4.8, which is close to the isoelectric point of wool, the hygral expansion reaches its greatest value and drops at both lower and higher pHs. A similar relationship between pH and extensibility of wool fabric was observed. Values of relaxation shrinkage were found to be dependant on pH. The reasons for the pH dependence of dimensional properties are discussed and these include changes in wool fiber swelling, yarn crimp and polymer relaxation phenomena with changes in pH.

Natriuretic peptides (NP) were first identified in animals where they play a role in the regulation of salt and water balance. This regulation is partly mediated by intracellular changes in cyclic GMP (cGMP). NP immunoanalogues occur in many plants and have been isolated, with two NP encoding genes characterised in Arabidopsis thaliana L. (AtPNP-A and AtPNP-B). Part of AtPNP-A contains the region with homology to human atrial (A)NP. We report here on the effects of recombinant AtPNP-A and smaller synthetic peptides within the ANP-homologous region with a view to identifying the biologically active domain of the molecule. Furthermore, we investigated interactions between AtPNP-A and the hormone, abscisic acid (ABA). ABA does not significantly affect Arabidopsis mesophyll protoplast volume regulation, whereas AtPNP-A and synthetic peptides promote water uptake into the protoplasts causing swelling. This effect is promoted by the membrane permeable cGMP analogue, 8-Br-cGMP, and inhibited by guanylate cyclase inhibitors indicating that increases in cGMP are an essential component of the plant natriuretic peptides (PNP) signalling cascade. ABA does not induce cGMP transients and does not affect AtPNP-A dependent cGMP increases, hence the two regulators differ in their second messenger signatures. Interestingly, AtPNP-A significantly delays and reduces the extent of ABA stimulated stomatal closure that is also based on cell volume regulation. We conclude that a complex interplay between observed PNP effects (stomatal opening and protoplast swelling) and ABA is likely to be cell type specific.

Creatine monohydrate (CrM) supplementation has been shown to increase fat-free mass and muscle power output possibly via cell swelling. Little is known about the cellular response to CrM. We investigated the effect of short-term CrM supplementation on global and targeted mRNA expression and protein content in human skeletal muscle. In a randomized, placebo-controlled, crossover, double-blind design, 12 young, healthy, nonobese men were supplemented with either a placebo (PL) or CrM (loading phase, 20 g/day x 3 days; maintenance phase, 5 g/day x 7 days) for 10 days. Following a 28-day washout period, subjects were put on the alternate supplementation for 10 days. Muscle biopsies of the vastus lateralis were obtained and were assessed for mRNA expression (cDNA microarrays + real-time PCR) and protein content (Kinetworks KPKS 1.0 Protein Kinase screen). CrM supplementation significantly increased fat-free mass, total body water, and body weight of the participants (P < 0.05). Also, CrM supplementation significantly upregulated (1.3- to 5.0-fold) the mRNA content of genes and protein content of kinases involved in osmosensing and signal transduction, cytoskeleton remodeling, protein and glycogen synthesis regulation, satellite cell proliferation and differentiation, DNA replication and repair, RNA transcription control, and cell survival. We are the first to report this large-scale gene expression in the skeletal muscle with short-term CrM supplementation, a response that suggests changes in cellular osmolarity.

The phase behavior, hydrogen bonding interactions and morphology of poly(hydroxyether of bisphenol A) (phenoxy) and poly(var epsilon-caprolactone)-block-poly(2-vinyl pyridine) (PCL-b-P2VP) were investigated using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, optical microscopy and atomic force microscopy (AFM). In this A-b-B/C type block copolymer/homopolymer system, both P2VP and PCL blocks have favorable intermolecular interaction towards phenoxy via hydrogen bonding. However, the hydrogen bonding between P2VP and phenoxy is significantly stronger than that between PCL and phenoxy. Selective hydrogen bonding between phenoxy/P2VP pair at lower phenoxy contents and co-existence of two competitive hydrogen bonding interactions between phenoxy/P2VP and phenoxy/PCL pairs at higher phenoxy contents were observed in the blends. This leads to the formation of a variety of composition dependent nanostructures including wormlike, hierarchical and core–shell morphologies. The blends became homogeneous at 95 wt% phenoxy where both blocks of the PCL-b-P2VP were miscible with phenoxy due to hydrogen bonding. In the end, a model was proposed to explain the microphase morphology of blends based on the experimental results obtained. The swelling of the PCL-b-P2VP block copolymer by phenoxy due to selective hydrogen bonding causes formation of different microphases

Objective : To estimate the prevalence and co-occurrence of self-reported doctor-diagnosed arthritis, chronic joint symptoms (pain, aching, stiffness, or swelling on most days for a month), and transient joint symptoms (pain, aching, stiffness, or swelling but not on most days for a month), and to compare the sociodemographic characteristics, activity limitations, and health-related quality of life (HRQOL) of people with joint conditions with those who have no self-reported doctor-diagnosed arthritis and no joint symptoms.
Methods : Data from the 2004 population-based South Australian Health Omnibus Survey (n = 2,840, ages 18-96 years) were used in the study. Activity limitations were assessed using 10 activity limitations questions from the Short Form 36 health survey. HRQOL was assessed using the Assessment of Quality of Life scale.
Results : Half of all respondents reported having joint problems, with 26%, 11%, and 13% reporting self-reported doctor-diagnosed arthritis, chronic joint symptoms, and transient joint symptoms, respectively. Chronic joint conditions (self-reported doctor-diagnosed arthritis and chronic joint symptoms) accounted for 74% of all joint problems and were associated with higher odds of activity limitations and poorer HRQOL. The frequency of transient and chronic joint symptoms was highest among middle-aged participants (ages 45-54 years for transient and 45-64 years for chronic joint symptoms) and those who had a body mass index in the obese range. Prevalence of self-reported doctor-diagnosed arthritis increased with age and was higher among women and those who were overweight or obese.
Conclusion : This study documented the high prevalence and impact of joint conditions in the community. Chronic joint conditions affect daily life and are substantial barriers for effective public health interventions aimed at reducing obesity and inactivity.

Wool fabrics are often treated under conditions of varying pH in dyeing and finishing processes. It is known that in air the dimensions of wool fabrics change with the amount of fiber swelling at different regain. In this work, it has been shown that a similar relationship between fiber swelling and fabric dimensions existed in water at different pH values. The diameters of Merino and Corriedale wool fibers in water at different pH values were measured with an OFDA 2000 fiber diameter analyzer, fitted with a specially constructed accessory liquid cell. The results showed that the mean diameters of swollen wool fibers in water varied with pH. Minimum swelling was obtained in the range pH 5-7. It was found that the dimensions of wool fabric in water were dependent on the pH. The changes in fiber diameter in water could be attributed to changes in ionic interactions between charged acid and basic groups in wool protein with variations in pH.
